&amp;amp;ldquo;Kaizen&amp;amp;rdquo; is Japanese for &amp;amp;ldquo;change for the better&amp;amp;rdquo; or &amp;amp;ldquo;continuous improvement&amp;amp;rdquo; in business activities.&amp;amp;nbsp; This could be beneficial to accountants when you consider the problems of &amp;amp;ldquo;digital disruption&amp;amp;rdquo; and Standard Business Reporting (SBR).&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
Kaizen is a business philosophy of continuous cost reduction, reducing quality problems and waste and delivery time reduction through rapid team-based improvement activities.&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
For change to happen in the workplace, you have to change actions.&amp;amp;nbsp; If you work the same way today as you did yesterday, you will end up with a same result.&amp;amp;nbsp; The key factors within Kaizen include:&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; planning the job;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; work backwards from the shipping date;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; dissect the job into its components;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; set a time for the job;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; use a production management whiteboard;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; set targets; and&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; measure the performance.&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
Kaizen embraced the Five S framework of:&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; good housekeeping&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; tidiness&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; orderliness&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; cleanliness&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; standardised clean up practices&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
The management&amp;amp;rsquo;s role in the Kaizen system is to:&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; secure the work;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; itemise the details of the job;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; establish management systems so that actual performance can be measured;&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; encourage suggestions from team members; and&#13;
&amp;amp;middot;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp; introduce small rewards.&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
The team&amp;amp;rsquo;s role is to sort the job out for themselves.&amp;amp;nbsp; Do it first then think.&amp;amp;nbsp; Try and improve productivity and tidying up.&#13;
&amp;amp;nbsp;&#13;
Kaizen&amp;amp;rsquo;s overall strategy is to empower individuals to improve their productivity.&amp;amp;nbsp; In other words, today, we do something different.&amp;amp;nbsp; I believe that understanding the Kaizen culture will assist accountants to meet the challenges of 2015.&#13;
