On \u201cBrown Wrinkled Dress\u201d she writes from the point of view of a woman who discovers her husband\u2019s infidelity; on \u201cVillage Green\u201d she sings in the voice of a servant who yearns for something more. Both songs echo traditional themes \u2013 \u201cBrown Wrinkled Dress\u201d is a murder ballad in the most classic sense \u2013 but others have an undeniably modern cadence. You can hear pop in Cortese\u2019s deftly-written hooks and rock \u2018n\u2019 roll in the syncopated pulse that propels even her gentlest melodies.
