This episode explores the old English custom of souling and soul cakes, the Irish and Celtic ways of welcoming the dead home in the dark half of the year, and the two plants that belong at this season's table: the apple, with its hidden star, and mullein, the "hag's taper" once carried as a light for the dead. In this episode Why Samhain was a season, not a single night, and how All Saints' and All Souls' grew from it Souling in Shropshire and Cheshire, and the Antrobus Soulcakers who still perform today Setting a place for the dead: Irish hearth customs and the American dumb supper Apple lore for Samhain, from Snap-Apple Night to Avalon, the isle of apples Mullein as the hag's taper, candlewick plant and New England's "Quaker rouge" A simple, gently spiced soul cake recipe and a warm apple cup for the ancestors' table Herbs featured Apple — Samhain's fruit. Apple seeds release cyanide when crushed, so never grind them into food. Mullein — use the leaves and flowers, never the seeds. Strain mullein tea through a fine cloth to catch the tiny hairs. If you light a dried stalk, do it outdoors in a fire-safe spot and never leave it unattended. This week's ritual: Set a place at the table for those who came before — an apple cut crosswise to show its star, a candle in the window with a dried mullein stalk beside it, and your ancestors' names spoken aloud.
