A wrong number can be the start of quite an adventure. As long as you don’t rush to put the caller right. In my novel Tumult in Mecca, Jakob Bertelsen gets a call from the Saudi embassy in July 1979. They need a company to renovate and run the kitchens at five hospitals in Taif, up in the mountains east of Mecca. Jakob is a restaurateur. He knows nothing about hospital kitchens, but says he can help. He suspects they’ve dialled the wrong number. He doesn’t ask. Instead, he finds a company that fits out hospital kitchens around the world and brings them in as a subcontractor. Then he rings his younger brother, Henrik. Henrik, the protagonist of the series, is working as an economist at the Ministry of Labour. He also teaches at the university, is helping to set up a co-housing community and is preparing to adopt a child from Indonesia with his English wife, Sammy. His diary is already full, and so is his head. Hospital kitchens in Saudi Arabia aren’t his field either. What Jakob needs is someone who speaks and writes fluent English. Henrik can do that. But is that a good enough reason to say yes?
