I've been called lazy, angry, manipulative, attention-seeking, self-sabotaging, noncompliant, and difficult. And here's the uncomfortable truth: at different points in my life, some of my behaviors gave people very good reasons to use those words. I hurt people. I pushed healthy people away. I created chaos. I lied to avoid confrontation. I looked for validation in unhealthy ways. I missed appointments, questioned providers, struggled to follow through, and sometimes fought against the very people trying to help me. But the labels didn't tell the whole story. In this episode of The Courageous Journey, I'm going deeper than I usually do into the woman I used to be and what I understand about her now. We talk about childhood trauma, intimate partner violence, brain injury, chronic exhaustion, hypervigilance, people-pleasing, relationship patterns, healthcare experiences, and what can happen when survival responses become so familiar that we no longer recognize them as survival responses. This isn't about using trauma as an excuse. It's about understanding something I wish I had understood years ago: Understanding why we behave a certain way doesn't remove accountability. Sometimes understanding is what finally makes accountability possible. I can have compassion for the woman I was and still hold her accountable for the people she hurt. Whether you're a survivor, healthcare professional, first responder, advocate, educator, or simply someone trying to understand your own patterns, I hope this conversation encourages you to look beyond the label and ask a different question: What is this behavior telling us? Because the label may describe what you're seeing. It doesn't necessarily explain what's happening inside the person. Healing begins with understanding.
