France passed the world's first law requiring one, and it still isn't enforced. California tried and got vetoed over a cost of about $14 to $20 per machine. A federal bill is sitting in committee. A washing machine filter can capture the large majority of shed microfibers for an estimated $14 to $20 added to the cost of a machine, but France's 2025 filter law remains unenforced, California vetoed its own version in 2023, and a federal bill is still in committee.
