The authors of a public letter criticizing the Iranian government, signed by some of the most respected intellectuals and human rights activists in the Western world, have been accused of being misleading. The letter, titled “To Iran’s political prisoners, trapped between two blades of a scissors” was published in The Guardian and included signatures from Angela Davis, Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers, Judith Butler, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and others. The letter argues that Iranian dissidents are trapped between the war waged by the US as well as the oppression of their own government. Immediately after the letter was published, other prominent human rights advocates voiced their critiques of the letter, saying that putting focus on Iran’s human rights abuses creates a false moral equivalence between the imperialist violence of the US and the violence of the country under attack. Mumia Abu-Jamal, who has been an activist while serving a death sentence in prison for the past four decades, announced that his name was used on the letter without his permission, and prominent historian Robin D.G. Kelley said that he was mislead when being asked to sign it.
