Two recent events have highlighted the controversy and dangers of artificial intelligence. During a cybersecurity test in a controlled environment, an artificial intelligence software agent developed by the company OpenAI exploited a security vulnerability to escape from its test and connect to the public internet. It then hacked into Hugging Face, a prominent AI development platform, to obtain information needed for its task. OpenAI called it an unprecedented incident. Rival AI company Anthropic disclosed that during tests, its Claude AI models gained internet access and hacked into the systems of three real-world companies. More than one thousand employees and executives from leading AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta signed a petition urging the U.S. government to join an international effort to slow down the pace of advanced AI development. Some critics have suggested that the dramatic events might be a form of fake marketing hype intended to generate investor interest by showing how powerful their models are.
