For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. \u2014 2 Peter 2:17-19 Not every promise of freedom sets you free. Peter calls false teachers \u201cwaterless springs.\u201d They promise refreshment but deliver nothing. Their words sound liberating, but their lives reveal bondage. They offer people freedom while remaining \u201cslaves of corruption\u201d themselves. Their message is still popular today. It sounds like: Follow your desires. Reject every boundary. No one has the right to tell you what to do. Do whatever makes you happy. All this sounds like freedom. But Peter exposes the lie: \u201cWhatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.\u201d Sin never advertises itself as slavery. It presents itself as much more enticing\u2014as relief, pleasure, or personal preference. But once gratified, it begins making demands. What you once chose occasionally becomes something you cannot stop choosing. The desire becomes a habit. The habit becomes a master. The master makes you a slave. I have become very suspicious of any so-called freedom that requires me to hide, lie, compromise, or lose self-control. If I cannot say no to something, I am not free from it. It will have authority over me. That is the test Peter gives us. Can you say no? Can you walk away? You are not free just because you can do whatever you want. You are truly free when sin is no longer master over you. Jesus does not free us to obey every appetite. He frees us from being ruled by them. Under his lordship, we learn to say no to what destroys us and yes to what gives life. So examine the freedoms being offered to you. What do they promise? What do they demand? A freedom that removes Christ as Lord will always install another master. And a freedom that cannot say no is not freedom at all. DO THIS: Identify one desire, habit, or behavior that has become difficult for you to refuse. Remove one opportunity to feed it today, and tell a trusted believer: \u201cI do not want this to master me anymore.\u201d ASK THIS: What behavior does the world call freedom that Scripture reveals as bondage? Is there anything in your life you defend as a choice but struggle to stop choosing? How does submission to Jesus produce greater freedom rather than less? PRAY THIS: Jesus, expose every false freedom in my life and teach me to live under your lordship instead of being mastered by my desires.
