The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.\u201d And this word is the good news that was preached to you.  \u2014 1 Peter 1:22-25 Every generation believes it is building something that will last. Nations rise, businesses grow, movements gain momentum, and new ideas capture people's attention. For a moment, they seem permanent. Yet history tells a different story. What once looked unstoppable eventually fades. What once seemed certain eventually passes away. Peter understood this reality. His readers lived under the shadow of Rome, the most powerful empire on earth. Rome's influence stretched across the known world. Its armies were unmatched, its culture was dominant, and its future appeared secure. If any kingdom looked permanent, it was Rome. Yet Peter reminds believers that even the greatest human achievements have an expiration date. Quoting Isaiah, he writes, "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls." These words carried a rich history. Isaiah first spoke them to Jewish exiles living under Babylon. Generations later, Peter applies them to Christian exiles living under Rome. The empires changed. The rulers changed. The pressures changed. But God's Word did not. That is Peter's point. Everything people trust in eventually fades. Beauty fades. Strength fades. Wealth fades. Influence fades. Even the things that appear permanent are often far more fragile than we imagine. But there is one thing that does not fade. "The word of the Lord remains forever." Peter is not merely talking about words written on a page. He is talking about the enduring message of the gospel\u2014the good news that brought these believers from death to life. Through that message, they had been born again, not through something perishable, but through an imperishable seed. This is why the gospel has endured through every generation. It sustained Abraham as he waited for God's promises. It strengthened exiles in Babylon. It gave hope to believers living under Rome. It transformed Peter's life after his failure. And it is still changing lives today. That should give you and me confidence. The greatest confidence. God-confidence. The culture around you is not the first culture to oppose God, and it will not be the last. The ideas that seem so powerful today will eventually pass away, just as countless others have before them. But the Word that gave you life will remain. So do not build your life on what is popular. Do not anchor your hope to what is temporary. Build your life on the truth that has outlasted every empire, every movement, and every generation. Because when everything else fades, God's Word remains. And those who trust it will stand firm. DO THIS: Identify one thing you have been investing significant time, energy, or attention into. Ask yourself whether it is temporary or eternal, and consider how God's Word should shape your priorities. ASK THIS: What temporary things am I most tempted to build my life around? How has God's Word sustained me in difficult seasons? What would change if I invested more deeply in what lasts forever? PRAY THIS: Father, thank You for Your enduring Word. When so many things around me are changing, help me build my life on what never changes. Teach me to treasure the gospel, trust Your promises, and stand firm in Your truth. Amen.
