Triggered by the ongoing war between Iran and the US, the world is currently experiencing the largest oil supply crisis in history. Analysts for Goldman Sachs, one of the largest financial institutions in the world, called the ongoing crisis the "largest-ever supply shock" in the history of the global crude market. The crisis is a result of Iran’s control over the the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway in the Persian Gulf used by twenty percent of the world’s oil tankers. After the US and Israel bombed Iran in February, Iran began using the Strait of Hormuz as leverage for negotiations. In the first two weeks since the initial attacks by the US and Israel, the average price of gasoline in the US rose by almost twenty percent. Oil is also fundamental for air transport, manufacturing of plastics, and agriculture, meaning that the cost of shipping food, running farm equipment, and producing many goods will sharply increase in the coming weeks, if negotiations continue to fail. About one-third of the world's fertilizer trade also passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
