A recent investigation by The Intercept has revealed that Google secretly complied with a request made by ICE to provide the private information of a student who particpated in a protest. Amandla Thomas-Johnson is a British student journalist who briefly attended a five-minute protest against Israel at Cornell University in 2024.The action resulted in him being banned from campus. In March of 2025, ICE submitted a subpoena to Google requesting his usernames, addresses, an itemized list of services including any anonymization services, telephone numbers, subscriber numbers or identities, and credit card and bank account numbers. The subpoena provided no justification for the request beyond stating it was "in connection with an investigation relating to the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.” These types of requests are usually only made in investigations of serious crimes such as human trafficking, and the target is immediately informed of the subpoena and given 10 to 14 days to challenge it in court. However, Google complied with ICE, provided the information, and then informed Thomas-Johnson via email.
