On January 8th in St. Paul, Minnesota, ICE agents pulled Castañeda from a friend's car, threw him to the ground, handcuffed him, and beat him with fists and a steel baton. He was then taken to a facility where the beating allegedly continued. He suffered eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages. He suffered significant memory loss, including forgetting he had a daughter, and has issues with balance and coordination, which prevent him from working. A federal judge ruled on January 23rd that his detention was unlawful and ordered his release. Agents told hospital nurses Castañeda "purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall, an account that a nurse referred to as “laughable.” Doctors found fractures on all sides of his skull, stating this pattern was inconsistent with running into a wall. His attorneys and the Mexican consulate are pursuing a legal strategy to determine responsibility.
