Farrell, MD, MFA, is a chief resident in radiation oncology at UCLA. He grew up in Sacramento, studied film and creative writing at Stanford, and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Oregon, where he taught undergraduate writing courses and wrote a collection of short stories for his thesis. Realizing that much of his creative work explored illness and cancer, he decided to pursue a career in medicine and attended medical school at Oregon Health & Science University before moving to LA for residency. His academic interests include health-related quality of life, JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion), narrative medicine, and health humanities. He has published essays and poems in JAMA, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Practical Radiation Oncology, and other journals, and he currently teaches a narrative medicine course to 4th-year medical students. He lives with his wife, Jessica, an internal medicine physician, and their newborn son, Rowan. The Cancer Education Series is a joint effort between Above + Beyond Cancer and MercyOne in Des Moines, Iowa.
