It is the strategy which stigmatized professionals use to gain some measure of acceptance in dominant majority white space. It is the act of molding social reality around oneself to be an OK and accepted Black person in for example the Whiteworld of Accounting. How is this achieved? By making sure that an Afro is not shown at work or to clients as this cultural hairstyle is seen as unprofessional. It is to make sure the strong Black woman financial services professional is not stereotyped into being a \u2018Sapphire,\u2019 that shrill and emasculating trope used to put Black women in their place should they challenge mansplaining of their own ideas. It is to conform just enough to hopefully be given the benefit of the doubt in the white male workplace, enough to confer genuine professional status upon the stigmatized other. This way career advancement is possible. It seems a little crazy right? But in this episode, I challenge you to go into your own workplace and look closer at what people of color wear and how they act. Is it extremely professional so as to advertise their right to be in this all too pale and male space which often questions their competency to be there?
