Paul the Pastor-Theologian

David continues the series on the life of Paul, looking at Paul as a pastor-theologian and asking what makes someone a truly great Christian leader. He begins with examples of fictional leaders such as Leonardo the Mutant Hero Turtle, Captain Kirk, Aragorn and Ted Lasso, arguing that great leaders have the ability to inspire a response. Leadership is not just about having good ideas; it is about turning vision into reality and moving people to act. David then applies this to Paul. Paul was not only a thinker or theologian. He was a leader whose teaching always moved from what Christians should believe to how Christians should live. Using Ephesians 4, David explains the fivefold pattern of church leadership: apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers. These roles are not given so that leaders can do everything themselves, but so they can equip the whole church for works of service. Church should not be like a football match where thousands watch while a few do all the work; every member has a part to play. David then shows how Paul combines theology and practical discipleship. In letters such as Ephesians, Colossians and Romans, Paul first explains the significance of Christ and the gospel, then asks how that truth should transform everyday life. For Paul, good thinking must lead to good practice. From Ephesians 4, David identifies three priorities for the church. First, unity. Paul repeatedly calls Christians to live in harmony, peace and love. Unity is beautiful, but fragile, and it requires deliberate effort. David says unity is maintained by keeping Jesus at the centre and by developing strong, genuine relationships with one another. Second, maturity. Christians begin as spiritual infants, but God wants them to grow. Just as babies move from milk to solid food, believers should move deeper in their understanding of Scripture, prayer, Christian community and service. Spiritual maturity means becoming increasingly able to recognise truth and resist false teaching. Third, believers should grow towards the fullness of Christ. David illustrates this with a car: is Jesus outside the car, in the boot, in the back seat, in the passenger seat — or is he driving? Christian maturity means allowing Jesus to take the wheel and submitting every part of life to his lordship. Drawing on Romans 12, David explains that this transformed life should be seen in sincere love, devotion, hospitality, prayer, service, perseverance and overcoming evil with good. He closes by reminding the church that leaders alone cannot produce a healthy church. The body grows when every part does its work. Using Jackie Pullinger’s phrase, David prays that Christians will have “soft hearts and hard feet” — hearts softened by God’s compassion and feet ready to go wherever he calls.
