Hello, and welcome to "Beauty and the Biz," where we'll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery. As always, I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of "Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying." and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits. Ravi Somayazula, DO explains how at his Houston, TX plastic surgery practice, he went 100% cosmetic in 2 years. First, Dr. Ravi Somayazula finished his plastic surgery fellowship with a perfectly reasonable plan. Specifically, he wanted to operate, work hard and eventually build a cosmetic practice in Houston. Next, his wife asked how he planned to make that happen. Unsurprisingly, his answer was simple. Basically, he was a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon. Therefore, the cosmetic patients would surely come. However, her response was blunt. Explicitly, she stated, "You’re an idiot." Ultimately, that conversation became a turning point. Instead, Dr. Ravi reduced his insurance volume to make room to build. Consequently, he stopped dividing his attention among reconstructive surgery, hand surgery and his desired cosmetic work. Amazingly, within two years, his practice went from 100% reconstructive to 100% cosmetic. Indeed, "He Went 100% Cosmetic in 2 Years" as discussed in this "audiocast". Currently, he operates from his 25,000-square-foot building. Notably, this facility includes: First, "Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Associates" operates here. Secondly, "RISE Med Spa" is located inside. Additionally, a two-operating-room accredited surgery center provides surgical space. Finally, there is space for additional surgeons and complementary medical tenants. Specifically, we talk about the focus, financial patience and leadership required to make that transition. Moreover, we discuss why a busy solo surgeon can become trapped by success. Similarly, we explore what it takes to build something larger than one operating schedule. Next, discover which work Dr. Ravi had to let go of first. Subsequently, the practice he wanted could successfully replace it. Interestingly, one of his biggest growth lessons was not about surgery or advertising. Rather, it was learning to become a better leader. Ultimately, he learned to hire people with an ownership mentality. Additionally, Dr. Ravi’s experience is one of many examples of practice growth. Therefore, successful surgeons clearly think differently. Recently, I collected the most useful lessons from 175 surgeon interviews. Consequently, you can find these insights in my new book, "Plastic Surgery Practice Growth Playbook." Finally, you can get your copy here.
