On Friday, thirty three Democrats in the House of Representatives joined Republicans in passing a bill that would strip student financial aid, from universities that participate in commercial boycotts of Israel. Forcing their schools to boycott Israel is a tactic used by student movements to stop the genocide of Palestinians. If the bill becomes law, any university receiving federal student aid would have to certify, every year, that it is not participating in a commercial boycott of Israel. The bill also requires that universities not create what it refers to as "unreasonable obstacles" that would prevent students from participating in academic exchange programs in Israel. This includes programs in the West Bank, which is illegally occupied by Israel under international law, and students in the US would be forced to cooperate with them to receive federal funding. The bill will now move to the Senate, where it is likely to be approved unless Democrats block it, and then it would need to be signed by the President in order to become law. Two Republicans voted against.
