8-7-26 IMMIGRATION / CITIZENSHIP

On Thursday, President Trump signed two new executive orders restricting birthright citizenship. In June, the Supreme Court rejected his attempt at ending birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed in the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution. Trump’s executive orders have generally been considered a directive to the agencies that are loyal to him, while those opposed to him challenge their legality in court. Trump’s first new order punishes babies born to so-called alien enemies and foreign terrorist members. The second order denies visas to parents suspected of doing what the Administration calls “birth tourism.” Estimates suggest only twenty to twenty five thousand babies would be punished annually, which is far less that the amount of babies punished in Trump’s original proposal. Trump’s new orders, which include denying birthright citizenship to the babies of “individuals lobbying for foreign governments,” comes days after pro-Israel lobbying groups spent seventy million dollars to influence Michigan’s Senate primary elections.
