In honor of Father’s Day, the walk featured an interactive, theatrical tribute to four local fathers and grandfathers at key stops along our route, brought to life through richly textured audio monologues. Our walkers got their steps in while connecting with four remarkable, distinct life stories: Michael John Booth: An adventurous Army veteran and organic farming pioneer who lived in the Everglades, wrestled alligators, and spent his summers captaining historical boat tours in the Adirondacks. William 'Bill' Thomas Young: A charismatic paratrooper and bank Vice President who was once voted 'Most Likely to Become a Movie Star'—a man with a massive personality who protected his community so much he refused bank loans for motorcycles just to keep people safe. Ollie Emmett Dean: A dedicated DeLand carpenter who quietly spent 50 years building our town, beautifully remembered through the eyes of his granddaughter, who recalled him always wearing a red poppy over his heart as a silent tribute to veterans. James William Robinson: A lifelong Kentucky farmer whose son brought him down to DeLand for his final three months, poignantly remembered through a raw, emotional monologue about the transition from Kentucky clay to Florida sand, and the vast family legacy left behind. It was a beautiful reminder that health isn’t just about the physical steps we take—it’s about grounding ourselves in community, sharing meaningful stories, and honoring the legs of the generations that walked before us.
