30. Vulvar Pain Is Not “All in Your Head”… But Your Brain Is Definitely Involved

Have you ever asked about your vulvar pain and been told… “it’s normal,” “it’s stress,” or the deeply unhelpful classic, “just relax”? In this episode, Labia Logic Dr. Adriana Martí joins the conversation to get into the very real, very frustrating world of chronic vulvar pain. Dr. Marti is a clinical health psychologist and she joins Dr. Ashely Fuller and Dr. Meredith McClure to share why treating chronic vulvar pain usually takes more than one magic pill, one procedure, or one awkward appointment where everyone avoids saying the word vulva. They discuss why chronic pain is different from acute pain, how the brain and nervous system can amplify pain signals, why catastrophizing is not a character flaw, and how stress, trauma, loneliness, relationships, and self-criticism can all turn the pain volume way up. This episode covers how pain education, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, pain reprocessing, and a biopsychosocial approach can help people relate to pain differently and reclaim more of their lives. We’re here to offer validation, practical hope, and the much-needed reminder that chronic vulvar pain is complex, treatable, and deserving of care that sees the whole person, not just the body part causing the drama. About our Guest: Dr. Adriana Martí is a Health Psychologist who was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. From an early age Dr. Martí experienced the challenges of poverty and lack of freedom of speech. That's when she realized that she wanted to use her voice and skills to make a profound impact in the world. Dr. Martí left Cuba at the age of 12 and embarked on her journey to make a difference by choosing a career in the healthcare field. Coming from a family of physicians, Dr. Martí learned the importance of addressing physical components to heal the body. She also noticed the weaknesses of the biomedical approaches and recognized the need of integrative models to help individuals shift from disease into ease. Dr. Martí has used her bilingual and bicultural assets to positively influence various medical settings, program development, management, underserved populations, and has mentored a myriad of students and medical personnel on the value of mind body approaches. Dr. Martí is very passionate about making a difference in the community and spends her free time learning about the latest advances in the field of chronic pain and contributing to research.
