  <title>The rise of billion-dollar US weather and climate disasters</title>
  <description> In this episode of the&amp;amp;nbsp;All Things&amp;amp;nbsp;Sustainable podcast,&amp;amp;nbsp;we're&amp;amp;nbsp;exploring how billion-dollar scale extreme weather and climate disasters in the US are growing in&amp;amp;nbsp;frequency and&amp;amp;nbsp;cost&amp;amp;nbsp;—&amp;amp;nbsp;and&amp;amp;nbsp;what&amp;amp;nbsp;that&amp;amp;nbsp;means&amp;amp;nbsp;for&amp;amp;nbsp;businesses,&amp;amp;nbsp;communities&amp;amp;nbsp;and&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;disaster&amp;amp;nbsp;recovery efforts.&amp;amp;nbsp;   The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&amp;amp;nbsp;(NOAA)&amp;amp;nbsp;previously developed and published the billion-dollar&amp;amp;nbsp;disaster&amp;amp;nbsp;report and its related historical database.&amp;amp;nbsp;In 2025, the agency&amp;amp;nbsp;discontinued&amp;amp;nbsp;the research and&amp;amp;nbsp;Climate Central picked up the baton for gathering&amp;amp;nbsp;the data&amp;amp;nbsp;and publishing related research.&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;   Climate Central is a nonprofit&amp;amp;nbsp;made up&amp;amp;nbsp;of climate scientists and communicators, including some former NOAA staff.&amp;amp;nbsp;In March&amp;amp;nbsp;2026,&amp;amp;nbsp;the organization published the latest&amp;amp;nbsp;report&amp;amp;nbsp;tallying&amp;amp;nbsp;US&amp;amp;nbsp;weather and climate events that caused at least&amp;amp;nbsp;$1 billion&amp;amp;nbsp;in damages.&amp;amp;nbsp;&amp;amp;nbsp;   In the episode,&amp;amp;nbsp;we speak to&amp;amp;nbsp;project lead&amp;amp;nbsp;Adam Smith, Senior Climate Impacts Scientist at Climate Central.
