Today, we're not just looking at granite and marble; we're pausing at the final resting places of four remarkable DeLand citizens whose lives spanned nearly a century of American history and touched fields ranging from combat to law, aviation to medicine. As we walk, we will hear the stories of service, resilience, and community commitment. First, we will honor Judge Harrison Dale Griffin, a decorated combat infantryman in World War II who returned home to become an admired and un-reversed County Judge. Next, we will meet Lillian Mohr Jost, a centenarian, Vassar-educated librarian, and World War II civilian pilot who helped found a cattle ranch and later served Stetson University. We'll stop at the marker for Hubert Deane Smith V, an Eagle Scout, architect, and beloved local commissioner who survived the hell of Iwo Jima as a Marine, earning the Purple Heart. Finally, we will visit Mildred Anderson Owens, an Army Nurse Corps First Lieutenant who served during the Korean Conflict, spending her life healing and serving as an Assistant Director of Nurses in our community hospitals. Together, their stories weave a compelling narrative of what it meant to serve one's country and one's community. Please take a moment to reflect on the lives they lived as we begin.
