Niekamp wa a St. Henry graduate before playing collegiately at the University of Miami. He started his coaching career at Parkway before taking over Ottawa-Glandorf for five seasons, which included Final Four trips in 1977 and 1978. His last stop before joining the college ranks was a six-year stint at Lima Senior which reached the state tourney in 1982. His high school record was 208-86. Niekamp then became headman at the Univesity of Findlay for 26 years, posting an impressive 598-185 mark, highlighted by a perfect 36-0 national championship season in 2008-09.
