High altruism, aging with grace, creating personal ritual, becoming an elder with Elena Brower

On our altruism and personal practice. Aging and elderhood. Stoicism. Self-mastery and pragmatism. Forgivness, shame and parenting, and so much more. Elena Brower, mother, mentor, artist, teacher, bestselling author and host of the Practice You Podcast, Elena has taught yoga and meditation since 1999. After graduating Cornell University in 1992, she designed textiles and apparel for almost a decade before focusing on yoga, meditation, art and writing. Her first book, Art of Attention, has been translated into seven languages; her second, Practice You, is a bestseller. Both Practice You and Being You are utilized as teaching tools in a variety of settings. Elena's first collection of poetry, Softening Time arrives in May 2023. Elena's yoga classes and meditations are featured on Glo. Her virtual Engaged Mentorship is renowned for inviting analog creativity into online coursework, and her Perceptive Parenting audio course is a key resource for parents. Elena's spoken word poetry can be heard on Above & Beyond's Flow State albums. She works to elevate bright futures for girls, women and children through her support for Girls on Fire Leaders, On The Inside and Free Food Kitchen. Her stunning work invites us to bring artistry and beauty into our everday, to offer our deepest listening, and to hone our attention. You can find Elena's work at https://elenabrower.com/ You can find out more about Katonah Yoga™ at https://www.katonahyoga.com/ And to connect with The Studio and Abbie Galvin visit http://www.thestudio.yoga/ A note on this episode: Since the recording of this episode I have learned neuroscience no longer speaks of the limbic brain and the frontal cortex as being the "reptilian brain" and they are finding that emotion is far more complex than we once thought. The amygdala is no longer considered to be the "fear center" for example but is only partially and sometimes involved in the emotion of fear. I do however still find the "lizard and wizard" a useful metaphor for the tensions and types of experiences that can arise interoceptively when we're at our best and when we're in states that are not always helpful.
