The Alchemy of Art with Rima Staines

Rima Staines (she/her) is an artist whose work straddles myth, magical realism, and the folk arts. She works predominantly as a painter, but also with music, writing, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, theatre, puppetry, animation, and book arts. In 2018 she was a finalist in the 'Best Artist' category of the World Fantasy awards. Rima has a long-held fascination with the idea of the liminal — that which lies at the edge of culture and society as well as the literal boundaries between one place and another, both metaphorical and real — and with the power of art that comes from that liminal place. I have Rima’s “The Old Song” and “Maiden, Mother, Crone” paintings hanging above my desk, they offer me daily inspiration. In this episode, Rima and I discuss: - Rima’s creative process and where she draws creative inspiration from - Art as alchemy - The weaving of many art mediums and Rima’s experience with not only fine art and painting, but also bookbinding, publishing, puppetry, and music - Mothering and what it has taught and is teaching Rima - How Rima balances motherhood and art making - The grief of mothering without a village - Living with epilepsy and what it has taught and is teaching Rima I cannot encourage you enough to look at (and purchase!) Rima’s incredible paintings, they are so unique and speak deeply to the liminal spaces of life.
