Prememento #102: Season 3 Episode 26 - NIgel Martyn

Nostalgia appeals so much because of it’s simplicity. We know the context for how something happened and what became of it. As football has evolved, so to has the reading of it become infinitely more complicated. Goalkeeping used to be about the uttermost basic of basics, to the point where it sounds almost patronizing to think nowadays. All you had to do, was stop the ball going in the net. There was one name on everyone’s lips in the nineties when it came to English goalkeepers and Nigel Martyn wasn’t it. Which is a shame for a player who epitomized dependability. Remembered fondly and decorated by the fans of all the clubs he played for, it’s about time we put some respect on the name of one of the safest pair of hands out there.
